Descriptive Narrative: A rectangular box carved of wood, hinged with thong and fastened with a thong loop to a peg on box. The lid has 2 faces carved on it, one with a large upturned mouth and 2 white beads as labrets, the other a large mouth semicircular on the upper side. At center of lid, a large blue bead at crossing of 2 diagonal lines. The bottom is carved in low relief with an animal that has the head of a seal, flippers and a long tail.

Descriptive Narrative: A) typical Athapaskan knife is made of metal, often native copper by cold hammering. It is made in one piece with a fluted double edged blade. The metal handle is padded with leather and terminates in fluting voluted antennae.
Descriptive Narrative: b) sheath made of thin moosehide with the seams edged with blue and white beads and on the front at the top there is a solid section of beading about 2" deep. The tip of the sheath is capped with a thin piece of copper.

Descriptive Narrative: Carved of carbonaceous shale (slate or argillite). A canoe with oblong insets of bone on the gunwales and a figure of the sea monster engraved on both sides- front and back. 8 paddlers, holding short paddles, 2 are women. At each end a struggle is going on.

Descriptive Narrative: Carved wood spoon. Bowl and most the back is "natural" or light tan color. Red pigment has been painted onto the bowls rim, handle and on the back about 1" down from where the handle and bowl meet. A 1" X ½" rectangular hole is cut at the top of the handle. A rough design of alternating triangles is lightly cut into the front of the handle. Numerous pin point sized holes (teeth marks?) are found along the handle. A small nail hole on the proper right side of the bowl has a ½" to ¾" crack running away the hole in both direction.. Culture: Russian

Notes: This wood spoon, an Aleut wood peg calendar, (III-X-40 a,b) a Russian painted wood spoon and a Russian brass spoon arrived at the museum at the end of June 2003. This was an unsolicited donation from Charlotte Ballard of Seattle, WA. See Accession file #431 a,b for donor forms and correspondence. The two Russian spoons were offered to and accepted by the Alaska State Museum in Juneau. Mrs. Ballard's father collected the pieces when the family lived in Valdez, Alaska from 1906 to the mid 1930's. She remembers playing with the calendar and seeing leather straps attached as hinges. Mrs. Ballard also recalls her father saying he got the brass spoon "out to the westward." It could be the other 3 pieces also came from the "westward."

Descriptive Narrative: Carved walrus ivory figurine in the form of a sea otter reclining on its back with the front paws touching on the sides of the head. The eyes are drilled holes. There is a longitudinal center line incised down the stomach incorporating a series of drilled holes of 2 different sizes. There are diagonal lines running downward to the side from the center line. The back paws and tail are folded up onto the stomach. There are 5 shallow holes/dots on the tail and incised vertical lines on the rear paws (which more closely resemble flippers) 3 on the left and 4 on the right. There is a grey "dot" in the ivory on the left side below the last diagonal line. The reverse is a raised ridge with the ivory on the left side below the last diagonal line. The reverse is a raised ridge with flat topped ridge in the form of a cleat with 2 holes drilled horizontally through the ridge. There is rough cross hatching on the flat surface of the ridge. The concave surface behind the head is highly polished from use. The outer end of the ridge is diagonally cut up to the tail/paws. There is not a lot of wear appearing on the edges of the horizontal holes.

Descriptive Narrative: Doll size chief's coat made of what appear to be the feathers from three different bird species. Male mallard duck feathers are used on the top of the shoulders and on the lower back. The neck, cuffs and facing on the jacket opening are edged with muskrat (?) fur. The bottom is edged with unplucked beaver (?) with the fur side sewn to the inside. The back of this has been painted/stained with a deep purple color. A 2-ply sets of ties on the inside front of the coat. The coat is lined with black rayon(?). All stitching appears to have been done with black thread.

Descriptive Narrative: Headdress frontlet carved in a close grained hard wood. The slightly rectangular back plaque is convex vertically and concave horizontally. The face of a young woman is carved in high relief in the central part of the rectangle. The face is bordered on the sides and top by rectangular pieces of abalone shell set in a red painted bordered. The area between the inlay and the face is painted blue (Rickett's laundry bluing ?) The face has hair, eyebrows and eye orb outline painted black with red painted lips. On the forehead is a cross of inlaid abalone shell, across the nose and on the face's right cheek is a slanted line of abalone inlay and on the left cheek is abalone inlay of intersecting lines. The pupils of the eyes are circles of inlaid abalone inlay. At the inner corner of the left eye is an area where the carver cut through leaving a slightly crescentric hole. There are a number of abalone inlays missing. The adhesive appears to have been a hide glue and red sealing wax. The frontlet was tied to its headdress framework through pairs of holes in the back plaque under the chin and on either side approximately where the ears would be.

Descriptive Narrative: Two ivory carvings. [Part A pictured] Part A: a tool or bag handle, with a flat side and 2 holes for attaching to the article. The top is carved. It appears to be a sea otter lying on its back, with long arms up to the head. 3" long; 3/4" wide; 5/8" thick. Part B: a carved seated human figure. It has legs, but no arms, and a well-carved head. 1-3/4" high; 5/8" x 1/2" across.

Descriptive Narrative: Pair of round-toed moccasins with large vamp and high ankle flaps, made of smoked moose hide and decorated with spot stitch beading on the vamp. The heel seam is t-shaped. A piece of commercially tanned leather has been recycled and sewn to the exterior of the soles. "b" has two holes in the original sole at the ball of the foot. Draw string tie cords have been added. The beadwork is of the Yukon-Tanana style based on Duncan. The moccasins are sinew sewn. The beadwork is thread sewn. Welting is used only on the moccasin/flap seam.
Inscription: Written on a commercial white cloth tag, in pencil: "Hudson Stuck Archdeacon of the Yukon gave me these. He traveled "mushed" in them." "Archdeacon" written on the reverse in pencil and crossed out.
Notes: These moccasins have been "resoled" by sewing a new sole of commercial leather over holes worn in the original smoked moosehide. This style of Athabaskan moccasins was not previously represented in our collection. They are also of interest in their association with an historic person. -PLC

Descriptive Narrative: Three piece smoked moosehide mittens with beaded floral designs on the backs in the finger area and on the back of the thumb. The seams are welted and sinew sewn. there were fur tops, now gone, originally sewn onto the cuff area with thread, some of which still remains. The bead colors are yellow, green, red, white, blue and cut brass. Beadwork appears to be sinew sewn.

Smoked moosehide moccasins.Smoked moosehide moccasins.Descriptive Narrative: Pair of adult (men's) smoked moosehide center seam moccasins with smoked caribou ankle flaps all sinew sewn. The vamp is covered with blue wool cloth edged with red and green commercial piping. The long caribou thong ties extend around the back of the moccasin and exit through the vamps and ankle flaps where they meet. There are floral beaded designs on the vamps in tan, blue, lavender, red, green, crystal and steel cut beads. All beadwork is thread sewn.

Descriptive Narrative: Coin-silver (?) souvenir teaspoon with Northwest Coast formline designs. At the top of the handle are two (2) repoussed bear's heads. Immediately below the bears heads are stylized form line claws. The lower claw is touching the nose of a fish figure. Just above the lower claw is an ovoid which encloses these marks ¦ ( (This varies from spoon I-A-881, which has in this same ovoid, but with only the ¦ ). Cross-hatching fills the space between the claws. A long triangle with six (6) curved hatch marks rests above the head and back of the fish form. The front of the bowl is filled with form lines, and other geometric-like designs. On the back of the bowl in script is Sitka 1892.

Descriptive Narrative: Spare paddle blade carved from natural light colored wood. Both sides of the blade have a central ridge with the back ridge ending at a tapering carved out groove. The base is 1 ¼" with the blade widening out to 3 5/8" inches and gradually tapering to an angular point at the opposite end. The point edge area is rough. A rawhide lashing is laced through 2 holes and tied. Two more small rectangular holes are located on the side near the base of the blade. Two small holes are located in the center of the groove 2" from the base. A repaired split along the side of the blade has 3 strips of baleen connecting 3 small holes on the break to 3 small holes on the blade. The break is 11" L X ½" W. On the top side of the blade is written in faded black ink "Eskimo Paddle Blade, Arctic Ocean, 1890, Presented by Sheldon Jackson." The back of the blade has 2 numbers: 110 in black ink; the other is 20 written in red ink on a white sticker near the 110. A black ink diffused stain is near the point. Other diffused black stains run along the blade edge and on the surface of the grooved side. Five knot holes of various sizes are visible on the blade.

Descriptive Narrative: 2-pocket wall pocket of seal gut and fabric which is tall and narrow with a conical top and a square bottom. The top panel is of gut with embroidery. Each lower corner has a triangular shaped gut inset with a ribbon welt. The lower 1/3rd of the panel has a light blue stain. There is a nail hole and rust colored stain at the top. Both pockets have an upper band of black (?) wool fabric, edged in red fabric with single rows of white beads, applied in overlay stitch, between them. On the upper pocket is a beaded design of two flowers with red centers, white petals, and red accents between the outer edges of the petals. The top band of the lower pocket is a beaded foliage design. The left side is red and white; the right, blue and white. both bands are lined in a thin white fabric with flocked polka dots. The two pockets are of seal gut, each with a centered diamond shaped inset having an embroidered round design in surface satin stitch. The insets are welted with ribbon. They are lined with thin white fabric. Around the whole item, the edges are bound in black fabric with white beads applied in a zipper-edging. The flannel backing is a cream color with alternating pink and pencil-thin grey stripes. It is made of 3 pieces joined together. There is blue staining at the upper right edge. and a pin-hole and rust at the top.

Descriptive Narrative: Wooden grease dish in the form of a floating bird ( crested auklet ?, puffin ?) with the cavity in the back; wings folded against the sides; head extended forward; white mt. goat wool pegged in two rows on top of the head; the tail extends horizontally behind. The dish is painted in black, red and blue/green; line dashing on the wings; stippling on the underside. Overlapping light looping lines on the underside of the tail.

Descriptive Narrative: A wolf mask with large mouth set with teeth that are carved out of the solid. Slender, toothpick-like whiskers on each side of the mouth, which is painted red. A line from the mouth goes up the center of the face and over the eyes; spread into the forehead. It is painted black with white dots. The remainder of the face is washed white. There are 7 white quills at the top of the mask.
