| | | Aleut children. | Children; Smiling; Toys; Indigenous peoples; Earthquakes; Natural disasters; Dolls; Indigenous peoples | Title taken from back of photo and accompanying note. "Junior Red Cross boxes brought smiles of delight to the faces of Aleut children in the Red Cross shelter at Camp Denali while plans were being made for their return to Old Harbor. Gift boxes were received from many places in the United States, including Los Angeles and Des Moines. Above, Caroline Alexandroff displays a doll from her gift box to Patrick Andrewvitch. (ARC [American Red Cross] Photo by Wold) 64-5050."
Note also reads: "Old Harbor's recovery from the havoc created by the Good Friday earthquake and seismic waves occupies a prominent place in the history of the American Red Cross Disaster Service.
"The Villagers, Aleut natives of Kodiak Island, fled to high ground when the waves wrecked their homes. On Saturday morning, March 28, they were ferried to Kodiak Naval Base aboard two crab boats, the Fern and the Chacon. Navy planes took them to a shelter near Anchorage.
"A month later the Aleuts were back on the island through the cooperative efforts of Red Cross, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management, the U. S. Public Health Service, and many other agencies, organizations and individuals. Red Cross and the Bureau of Indian Affairs shared the cost of the air transportation from Anchorage to Kodiak.
"On their return, the natives found snug, warm tent homes on wooden frames. The first returning group landed on May 1. Red Cross supplied tools, building materials, household essentials, food and clothing, free of charge.
"Within a few hours after their arrival, the Aleuts were hard at work, finishing the jobs started by the advance party. By Sunday, May 3, all of the natives were back in Old Harbor. That evening, as though their lives had not been disrupted by disaster, the Aleuts gathered for their traditional Russian Orthodox Easter Services." | UAF-1972-152-122 |

The home of the tin can and dog-
A waste of snow, ice and moss.
A grave-yard of ambitions,
A by-word for HELL,
The home of the famed double cross.
Men come here for gold, ambitious for wealth-
The stick, for they can't get away.
They dig, drink and die,
And then go to HELL
To pay for their last sucker play!

| | | Illustrated poem by Pat O'Cotter. | Wooden buildings; Cabins; Children; Mountain goats; Trading posts | -THEN-
1
A Home, a wife, and a family:
A job on the great outside-
But he heard the call of Alaska
And left them - unsatisified.
-THERE-
2
Winters of long hungry hardships,
Summers of pestridden hear:-
Dicing with deat for a grubstake:
Risking his life for meat:
Scorning the letters recalling;
Forgetting the friens he had known,
Turning his back on the Outside-
Facing the future alone.
-NOW-
3
A cabin, and squaw, and a fishwheel,
A bend in the rivers flow-
A couple of sad-eyed halfbreeds,
He stayed there - a Sourdough.
